Things i liked in science (09)

This year, in Mrs. Casey's science class we studied many different subjects and I have favorites in each subject, these subjects were Astronomy, Weather & climate, Weathering & Erosion, and last but not least Earth's Waters.Weathering & Erosion: Many types of weathering.
This was my favorite part in this subject because there are many different types of weathering and there are many ways weathering can happen, and i didn't know that! Weathering happens trough water, gravity, glaciers and even wind! Water shapes rock, forms arches, and manymore things to rocks. Weathering happens everywhere around us!
Geology: I learned that Geology is the study of Earth, Its substances, Shapes and history! Rocks, minerals, and fossils are only some of the things that Geology deals with. I thought Geology was just the study of the Earth, and not all the little things like the ones listed above. Geology also deals with the movement of the plate techtonics which brings us to Earth quakes. Earth quakes are caused by the Lithosphere always being in motion. Weather & climate. (Earth's Atmospheres) is also what i like about the 5 differnt things we learned in Mrs. Casey's 8th grade science class. Earth atmosphere consists of many different things like the 5 layers of of the atmosphere. These layers are the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and last but not least the Exosphere. Each of these layer's have there own different features. Astronomy: This subject deals with stars, planets, celestial bodies, and other galaxies.
Earth's Waters: this unit probably had to be my most favorite out of all the units we learned throughout the 5 subjects. I learned all the processes that water goes through to be clean. First. Its goes throught the screening part. Then the Primary clarifier, aeration tank, secondary clarifer, then through the chlorination plant and then finally the dechlorination part. which leads is to your at home faucets. As you can tell i learned a lot during my one year 5 subject, many unit, science class!

Compare and contrast

In Manitou springs we have our own water plants. To treat our water. Water comes mainly from snow melt on pikes peak! (75%) Some of the surface water comes from the Mississippi watershed and goes through 6 quality tests per month to ensure water safety and purity. In Colorado Springs approximately 65% of water comes from snow melt. The other 35% of water comes from reservoir of Aspen, Leddville, and Breckenridge.

What is the Water Cycle??

Q. What is the Water Cycle?
A.The Water Cycle is the process by which runoff water goes into a large water area, turns into evaporation from plants, lakes and oceans. Then turns into condensation, then goes into precipitation and falls back into groundwater, into a runoff, and repetitively starts over.
(The process by which water moves through the environment.)
Q.Does the Water Cycle have a beginning or an end?
A. Not really. The water cycle happens because the process is repetitively done. So technically no!
Q.Staring with a puddle on a sunny day, Describe how water might move through the Water Cycle and eventually fall back and then star up again?
A. Starting with a puddle on a sunny day, the sun will probably suck up some of the water and turn it to evaporation, then move to condensation, precipitation. Then rain, hail, or snow turning "the little puddle on a sunny day" into a large puddle.

Four Questions (

  1. What, specifically about your topic, are you going to research?
    1. I'm going to research "what it means to be green" Which means what to do with your lights, recycling, and saving energy. etc...
  2. What conclusions did you come to? What do you recommend average citizens do to make a difference? Be specific. This is the main part of your assignment.
    1. I recommend people to turn off all there lights when done using, not keeping the water on when brushing your teeth, use less water, and paper. Its very easy to recycle/re-use. many people can get used paper somewhere else, other then buying more, and more and more! saving water is a very good reusable/ recycle method!
  3. What would happen if, worst-case scenario, nobody listened to your recommendations?
    1. If nobody listened to my recommendations i think the Earth would just stay the same or at least get worse because our recommendations are very important to the world's surroundings. The world itself would just get a lot dirtier and we would not save any energy!
  4. What would happen if, best-case scenario, everybody listened to your recommendations?
    1. If people listened to our recommendation are world would get a lot cleaner and we would save a whole lot of energy. Yay! energy =]]

Jaws waves (largest funnest waves in Hawaii)

In Hawaii, surfing is big but the waves are even bigger! Theses waves are known as "Jaws" waves. Most dangerous, largest waves in the world. Now the question is... Where does these waves come from? Lets go to the mountains to find our answer. Many theories come from the shape of the islands coral reefs, but many don't know about the waterfalls influence. Waterfalls send their water rushing out to sea. The water come into contact with incoming waves and the crest of the original
wave gets ahead of it's base using energy which causes the water to be pushed upward causing the two sources of water to combine into one large wave that is the most amusing wave to surf on and causing much amusment.

Earthquake webquest- day 1

Most of the earthquakes tend to happen geologically and geographically. Geographically , where to plates meet. I think they mostly happen in that area because its an edge of plate tectonics that slides past, towards, and away from each other. They mostly occur near the pacific ocean. The area is called " The ring of fire". The earthquake closest to Manitou Springs is in Denver, CO. But people would not be able to feel because of the distance and the magnitude of the earthquake. You would not be able to feel this one because the magnitude is not high. Like a magnitude 1 is weak and aa magnitude of like 7 would be much stronger to the point where we could possibly feel a shake.

In this area called "off the coast of Baja California sur." The magnitude is 5.1. This area not much populated. It occurred on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 04:50:47 PM, just about 3 days ago from 1/21/08. When in a earthquake you must know how to stay safe. So one place you could be during an earthquake qould be in a doorway. Also, make sure the family is together and not apart in the house during an earthquake.
